Consumed - Week 4

2026-03-25

In the series finale of "Consumed," Pastor Jacob Carr looks at Jonah’s "shade tree" to reveal our own idols of comfort. Discover why God’s mission must override our personal happiness and what it means to truly make Jesus the King of your heart.

In the final installment of the "Consumed" series, titled "The Priority," Student Pastor Jacob Carr explores the famously abrupt cliffhanger ending of Jonah chapter 4. While Jonah sits outside Nineveh—hoping for a firework show of divine destruction—God uses a rapidly growing plant, a worm, and a scorching wind to expose Jonah's misplaced priorities. Pastor Jacob argues that many Christians today are like Jonah: more upset over the loss of personal comfort (the "shade tree") than the spiritual lostness of the people around them. This message serves as a powerful call to move beyond "halfway salvation" and recognize that if Jesus is your Savior, He must also be your King. Pastor Jacob challenges students to identify their own "shade trees"—the plans, lifestyles, or idols that they would struggle to give up if God called them to walk away. Ultimately, the series concludes with a reminder that God’s mission of compassion isn't just a side quest; it is the entire point of our lives. He doesn't expose our idols to shame us, but to liberate us for something far greater than we could ever ask or think.
