In Week 6 of Upside Down Living, Pastor Jacob unpacks Jesus’ teaching on being the salt of the earth and the light of the world, challenging us to live boldly and purposefully in a dark world.
This week in our Upside Down Living series, Pastor Jacob takes us to Matthew 5:13–16 where Jesus calls His followers the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” Salt preserves and flavors, but salt that loses its saltiness is useless. Light pushes back darkness, but light hidden under a basket fails its purpose. Jacob emphasizes that as Christ’s people, we don’t generate the light ourselves—it is Christ in us that shines into the darkness. Yet we have a responsibility: not to lose our saltiness through hypocrisy or compromise, and not to hide our light out of fear or comfort. True discipleship may sting like salt in a wound or expose like light in darkness, but it heals, preserves, and points others to the hope of Jesus. This message calls us to examine whether we are truly living as salt and light or simply blending into the shadows. Are we boldly reflecting Christ in a world desperate for truth and hope?
